Windows 7 strange resolution

i had vista first and et was rolling fine, but now win7 was installed and i have strange vertical black boxes on either side of the screen.
when i installed et on another pc in my house with win7, it had the same problem, but a friend of mine plays et on win7 without the black bars.

any help ?

wont work, i was on 800x600, when i change to lower, the black bars stay, when i change to higher i get the following error:

Have u installed gfx drivers ?
And what is max resolution of your screen

no idea what gfx drivers are?
my screen is on 1440x900, which is the maximum resolution.

Its the aspect ratio. Try this:

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customwidth "1440"
seta r_customheight "900"
